ABOUT LiUNA LOCAL 1197
Perhaps the largest collection of construction careers falls under the classification of laborers, specifically, those professionals with membership in Local 1197 of the Laborers’ International Union of North America. Those known as “Construction Craft Laborers” work in all areas of construction, including both residential and commercial projects.
With more than 500,000 members, the union, known by the shorthand LiUNA, helps workers enter construction careers through the organization’s apprenticeship and training programs.

HOW TO APPLY
APPLICATION PROCESS
How to Become a Member of the LiUNA Local 1197
Applications for the laborers apprenticeship program open online at 8:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month and remain available for two weeks or until the maximum number of applications is reached. The application can be found at www.illaborers.org. If you’d rather apply in person, applications are accepted at the union hall between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.
Once an application and all necessary documentation are submitted, the ILCJATP will contact applicants by U.S. Mail concerning the next steps in the application process.
To be considered for the apprenticeship program, you must be at least 17 years old, a high school graduate or have a GED. Additionally, you must be able to communicate well in person and in writing in English and be able to handle the physical requirements of construction work.

Applicants accepted into the program must pass a drug screening test.
The apprenticeship program lasts approximately three years, and participants earn progressively higher rates of pay as they complete the required work and training hours, working toward the full journey-worker rate. Apprentices must complete 480 hours of related training and 3,000 or 6,000 hours of on-the-job training, depending on the applicable program requirements.
The overall goal of the apprenticeship program is to develop highly trained, safe and knowledgeable dedicated professionals.

You must be at least 17 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED.
