ABOUT THE IRONWORKERS LOCAL 782
Rendleman says the union, officially known as the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers, has the potential for individuals to work on some of the most talked about construction projects in the area. And, he says, it all begins as an ironworker apprentice, a four-year program to a career in construction.
The Goal of Local 782 is to see every job completed safe, on time, and under budget.

Applications for the apprenticeship program are accepted as needed. Interested applicants should contact the Local 782 Training Center directly at 2424 Cairo Road in Paducah, Kentucky, or call (270) 442-2722 to confirm current availability and receive the latest application instructions for additional details.
To start with the ironworkers, Rendleman explained, applicants need to have a high school diploma or GED and be in good physical condition. Once the application is complete and returned to the office, he said applicants are scheduled for an interview. Applicants are selected for the program based on entries on the application and in the interview.
He says applicants with welding experience and safety training may receive additional consideration, but those skillsets are not necessary to be accepted in the program, they are things that can be gained through the apprenticeship. Applications are currently accepted as needed, and the Training Center directly provides current information about available apprenticeship opportunities.

The four-year apprenticeship program combines classroom and shop instruction at the local’s training facility in Paducah with supervised on-the-job training and practical field experience.
Training schedules are set by Local 782 and may vary by year. Classroom and shop instruction complements the hands-on training apprentices receive while working throughout the four-year program. The exact schedule and amount of instruction can vary based on local program requirements.
One of the advantages Rendleman explains of the ironworkers apprenticeship is that participants start at 70% of the journeyman wage rate, with health and welfare, pension and annuity contributions. “That’s a real selling point for us; we’re higher than most of the other trades,” he says.
Those benefits, besides outstanding hourly wages, include health and welfare, pension and annuity contributions under the current agreement. Applications are accepted as needed for apprenticeship opportunities.
