How to Become a Member of the Local 143
Crain says in order to do concrete work for companies like E.T. Simonds, employees must be a member of the union and go through specialized training either in Local 143’s three-year-long apprenticeship or by enrolling in a highway construction program at one of the area community colleges.
Access to the apprenticeship opportunity comes through an application with the union, he says. You may apply in person at the office any day of the week Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, excluding holidays. Located at 3301 N. Boardwalk Dr. Champaign, IL 61822.
Applicants must bring a copy of their original birth certificate, a High School Diploma or GED certificate, a driver’s license, an applicable DD214 and the required $20 cash application fee.

Once in the program, applicants will be involved in a mix of on-the-job training and classroom and training center work at a Local 143 training facility. Most of the in-house training takes place in the cooler months; summers are prime-time for on-site training with employers, paid learning and experience.
Crain explains that the apprenticeship program leads to high-paying, quality jobs.
Current union total packages range from $62.10 to $72.99 per hour by district, including health and welfare, pension and apprenticeship training contributions.
“it’s a very good, enjoyable craft,” he says. “I like that I can drive around the region and show you things I’ve done, work I’ve been a part of. We don’t go to a factory everyday, it’s always something different, somewhere different.”
